Leonard Segal Presented Three Sessions at Minnesota CLE’s 2019 Upper Midwest Employment Law Institute

The 2019 Upper Midwest Employment Law Institute took place on May 20 & 21, 2019, at the St. Paul RiverCentre.  Co-sponsored by Minnesota Continuing Legal Education, the Minnesota State Bar Association’s Labor and Employment Law Section, and the Twin Cities Human Resource Association, this annual conference was, once again, fantastic!

As in the past, Minnesota CLE asked Leonard Segal to present several sessions at this year’s ELI.  This year, Lenny presented the following three topics:

  • Sick and Safe Time in Minneapolis, St. Paul and Beyond:  Both Minneapolis and St. Paul enacted sick and safe time ordinances that took effect on July 1, 2017.  In addition, last year Duluth adopted its own SST ordinance that will take effect on January 1, 2020. This session helped familiarize employers with these ordinances and what they must do to be in compliance.  In addition, Lenny addressed the Minnesota Court of Appeals decision that came out just three weeks before the Employment Law Institute regarding the Minneapolis SST ordinance and its application to businesses located outside of the city.
  • Open Forum on Discipline and Discharge – Ask Your Toughest Questions Regarding Difficult Situations:  As suggested by the title, this was an open forum that allowed attendees to ask any and all questions regarding discipline and discharge.  Lenny had the pleasure of being part of a panel with two other experienced employment law attorneys.  Discipline and discharge issues can be tricky, and this session provided a great opportunity for those in attendance to receive guidance from experienced employment law attorneys.  This was a fun session that, time permitting, could have gone on much longer!
  • Open Forum on Handbooks and Policies:  Lenny was part of another three-attorney panel that took questions from attendees regarding employment handbooks and policies.  While drafting handbooks and policies may not be the most exciting part of one’s job, they are important, and this session was a golden opportunity for attendees to ask any and all questions.  As with the other open forum, this session could have continued for much longer than one hour.

Attendees of this year’s Upper Midwest Employment Law Institute learned a lot of information, received updates on the ever-changing world of employment law, and left the conference with great resource materials.  For further information about this year’s program, please click this link: 2019 Upper Midwest Employment Law Institute.
